Researchers in the UK and the US have described how atmospheric rivers, carrying moisture around the globe, brought heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding to the UK during 2012. Climate change means that these atmospheric rivers can carry more water vapour, with the potential for heavy downpours and greater flood risk. In testing their models, researchers were able to accurately simulate observed flood events in Europe, giving them confidence in their approach.
