Water supply management improved by better forecasting

Two recent articles focus on how critical weather forecasting is to effective reservoir management. In the US, forecast informed reservoir operations by helping engineers to balance water levels, preventing flooding and damage to dams in heavy storms, and allowing extraction when levels are low but with rainfall predicted.

Open-source mobile weather stations in Sri Lanka provide regular updates to monsoon forecasting – the once-daily average forecast by the meteorological office doesn’t supply enough detail to allow reservoir managers to prepare for monsoon downpours.
