Uncertainty and adaptation planning – review

Planning for the future is characterised by uncertainties (e.g. climate models, economic context , cultural developments), but decisions still need to be made.  This academic review attempts to compare related approaches to adaptation planning – all based on the Assumption-Based Planning approach – and to describe some of the tools that support them. The authors conclude that a sustainable adaptive plan would:

  • explore many relevant uncertainties
  • connect short-term targets to long-term goals
  • commit to short-term actions but keep options open
  • monitor and take action as necessary
