New research points to heavy downpours becoming a summer feature thanks to climate change. Researchers from the Met Office and Newcastle University used high-resolution climate models to investigate the kind of storms that create short, heavy rain showers. The simulations showed more intense rainfall in the summer – and that could mean an increased risk of flash flooding. Further work using other climate models will test the consistency of these findings.
