Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange (CAKE)
Based in the USA, Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange (CAKE) aims to build a shared knowledge base for managing natural systems in the face of rapid climate change, and help to build a community of practice.
Convention on Biological Diversity
The Adaptation Planning database is a web-based guidance on the integration of biodiversity within adaptation planning. Its purpose is to support parties as they continue to integrate climate change impacts and response activities through their implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. It contains useful information and tools on how to adapt to climate change.
CRiSTAL (Community-based Risk Screening Tool – Adaptation and Livelihoods)
Developed by the IUCN, IISD, SEI-US and Intercooperation, CRiSTAL is a decision-support tool designed to help project planners and managers better understand the links among climate change, livelihoods and their work. It was developed to help project planners and managers assess the relationship between their project and climate adaptation, in order that they might design activities that foster adaptation and minimise maladaptation.
Environmental Change Network
This site shows how climate, environmental, social and economic indicators, such as frequency of flooding, crop yields and wildlife activities have altered in recent years.
EQUIP
EQUIP is a team of researchers and practitioners from the UK climate modelling, statistical modelling, and impacts communities focusing on lead times of 2–20 years. More details on the EQUIP project.
Eionet (European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change)
The Guiding principles for adaptation to climate change in Europe paper provides a starting point for identifying success factors and case studies on how good adaptation could work in practice at various governance levels and in different sectors. It presents a set of guiding principles for good adaptation in Europe and identifies elements that support successful implementation.
Government Office of the South West
The Government Office of the South West publication on Managing Change contains a Change Management matrix which is a particularly valuable tool for understanding change management.
IPCC’s Data Distribution Centre
Results from other climate models participating in the IPCC assessment can be viewed using the Data Distribution Centre visualisation tool.
ioMosaic Corporation
For general guidance on designing effective risk matrices, see the work of the ioMosaic Corporation.
Met Office Hadley Centre monitoring
The Met Office Hadley Centre monitors a broad range of climate variables and indices worldwide for climate monitoring and climate modelling work. Got to the website for information on available UK datasets.
Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency
Guidance prepared by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP) in mapping and communicating uncertainties in environmental assessments may be helpful in structuring your consideration of uncertainty.
Princes Mayday Network
The Mayday Network is run by Business in the Community, and is a collaboration of businesses taking action on climate change and resource depletion. Mayday businesses work together and with partners to find and promote the best solutions to major environmental challenges. Adaptation is included within the Transform section of the Mayday journey.
ReGIS
RegIS was the first attempt in the UK to produce an integrated snapshot of possible regional futures, in East Anglia and the North West of England. It took into account both climate change and demographic and socio-economic trends.
RIVM/MNP
Guidance prepared by RIVM/MNP (the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency/National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) on assessing and handling uncertainty is a valuable resource for decision making with uncertainty.
Science for Environment Policy
Science for Environment Policy is designed to help the busy policy maker keep up to date with the latest environmental research findings. Subscribers receive a free weekly news alert by email which summarises policy-relevant research in an easy-to-read format.
University of Queensland
Creating climate adaptable settlements: Building resilience through adaptive planning is a free online course aimed at planning practitioners engaged in policy development and decision-making at a range of levels of government. The course recognises the need to employ a multi-disciplinary approach to climate change adaptation.
Publications
Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution
In their Adapting institutions to climate change report (pdf, 2.8 MB), the Commission set out a framework of key components to help organisations build resilience to climate change and hence adaptive capacity. A key recommendation is the use of an ‘adaptation test’ and they suggest ten pertinent adaptation questions.
SNIFFER
This handbook, published by Scotland and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research (SNIFFER) in 2006, presents the changes in climate across Scotland in the last century. It provides a benchmark against which we can measure future climate change and should help with the development of strategies to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Tyndall Centre
Surviving climate change in small islands: A guidebook (pdf, 1.4 MB) describes in detail why climate change is creating risks for small islands, why small islands need to address the risks, and offers methods for managing those risks. It provides information, ideas, tools and techniques to help people living on small islands to prepare for climate change. It has particularly useful sections on developing and implementing and adaptation strategy, and on effectively communicating your strategy.
