New fish on the block

Warming oceans are squeezing the suitable habitat of some familiar species of fish, such as haddock and plaice. The North Sea is warming – by 1.3⁰C in the past 30 years – and landings of species that prefer these milder conditions have increased by 2.5 times over the same period. The shallow North Sea offers little opportunity for haddock and plaice to migrate to cooler locations, so our domestic tastes may have to adopt a more Mediterranean flavour in future.
