Adapting to climate change can seem daunting. Therefore UKCIP provide a range of tools, methods and guidance that can be used to help organisations identify how they might be affected by climate change and what they can do to minimise their risks or exploit the opportunities.

Below is a summary of the tools, methods and guidance provided by UKCIP. If you are new to climate change and unsure where to start, we suggest you begin by using the Adaptation Wizard.

Tools portfolio: This diagram shows how the tools work together.

UK climate scenarios: Offers access to maps, datasets and guidance relevant to the UKCIP climate change scenarios.

Adaptation Wizard:  The Wizard takes you through a process to help determine your vulnerability to climate change, identify your key climate risks, and enable you to develop a climate change adaptation strategy. Also a guide to all of the information, tools and resources UKCIP can offer.

Socio-economic scenarios: Scenarios to help explore what future worlds might look like and to consider how our vulnerability to climate change and adaptation responses might vary with different future worlds.

Risk framework: A step-by-step decision-making framework to help you judge the significance of your climate change risk compared to the other risks you face, so you can work out what adaptation measures are most appropriate.

Costing the impacts of climate change: A methodology for calculating the costs of climate impacts and how to compare these to the costs of adaptation measures.

Business assessment tool: Helps users explore the implications of climate change for a particular business or sector

Local Climate Impacts Profile: LCLIP is a resource that Local Authorities can compile so that they better understand their exposure to weather and climate

Nottingham Declaration Action Pack: The Nottingham Declaration is a public commitment by council leaders and chief executives to tackle the causes and effects of a changing climate in their councils.

Adaptation resources: A range of tools providing guidance on identifying adaptation options and adapting to climate change:

  • Adaptation Actions: A searchable database that is part of The BRAIN. It contains examples of actions organisations are taking to adapt to climate change.

  • Identifying adaptation options: A guidance note that explores the nature and characteristics of adaptation in the context of climate risk.

  • Principles of good adaptation: A list of principles that can lead to better climate adaptation decision making.

The BRAIN: Base for Research, Adaptation, Impacts and News (aka our BRAIN) allows you to search for information on adaptation activities being undertaken by other organisations (Adaptation), examples of how we are already being affected by weather-related events (Impacts), examples of climate impacts and adaptation research being undertaken (Research) or articles previously included in Climate Digest.

Resources: Go to this section if you want to access Climate Digest (a monthly summary of the peer-reviewed literature on climate impacts and adaptation), briefing notes on key issues, information on training, news headlines, presentations, publications or Enews.
