What does UKCP09 mean for the Wizard?

A new set of climate change projections for the UK – UKCP09 – was released on 18 June. UKCP09 is the fifth generation of climate information for the UK, and is the most comprehensive package produced to date. UKCP09 reflects advances in our understanding in and modelling of the climate system, and in our ability to analyse modelled outputs. It provides, for the first time, probabilistic projections of climate change, based on quantification of known sources of uncertainty. To find out more about UKCP09 visit its dedicated website.

The current version of the Wizard (v 2.0) has been developed in the context of the UKCIP02 climate change scenarios. The high level climate changes described in UKCP09 are broadly consistent with those described in UKCIP02, so the availability of this new information does not invalidate work conducted using UKCIP02. However, UKCP09 is a very rich source of climate change information. Users are encouraged to visit the projections site and to learn more about how UKCP09 can help support their climate change impacts and adaptation assessments.

Those sections of the Wizard that draw on climate change information will be adapted to help users make the most of UKCP09. However, the conceptual framework of the Wizard will not change in the short term as a result of this new set of information.

If you need any help, or have any questions on what UKCP09 means for the Wizard, please contact Megan Gawith.
