UK Climate Projections (UKCP09)
The UK Climate Projections (UKCP09) gives climate information for the UK from now until the end of the century. The Projections of future changes to our climate are based on a new methodology designed by the Met Office, which allows a measure of the uncertainty in future climate projections to be included in the information.
In order to get the most from this new data set, UKCIP have built on the success of its national training programme for the Projections and developed a new range of courses and services to help businesses and organisations explore and understand the implications of our changing climate.
The following courses are available:
Please not that for all UKCP09 courses, you will require a basic level of competence in using the Internet.
UK Climate Projections – Introduction to UKCP09 and the User Interface
This course will introduce delegates to the UK Climate Projections and the UKCP09 User Interface and guide them through its basic functions. There will also be the opportunity to explore the User Interface under the guidance of UKCIP staff, so that individual areas of concern can be investigated. The first section of this course covers methods for obtaining data from the Projections with exercises to allow trainees to gain experience with the User Interface, and tutors explain how to interpret the graphs and maps produced.
In the second section trainees work in groups to use the Projections in answering a hypothetical adaptation query or answering one of their own with the assistance of UKCIP tutors.
All course materials and lunch are included.
Before joining the course delegates are encouraged to register on the UKCP09 User Interface and explore the Projections web site.
Please note that payment is required at the time of booking.
UK Climate Projections – User Interface Intermediate level
Building on the knowledge gained in the Introduction to UKCP09 and the User Interface course, here we further explore the functionality of the User Interface and look at the more complex issues surrounding the use of
- CDF plots
- PDF plots
- Joint probability plots
- Raw data
- and Storm surge height plots
Guidance on producing and interpreting these outputs is provided by UKCIP staff and time is provided, allowing delegates to think about and produce their own results.
All course materials and lunch are included.
Prerequisite: Previous attendance on the UK Climate Projections – Introduction to UKCP09 and the User Interface course, or demonstrable experience and familiarity with the outputs covered (working with probabilistic data, key findings, pre-prepared materials, custom maps, CDF plots and Plume plots).
UK Climate Projections – Marine data
In this course we have developed a range of specific examples to explore the wealth of data available on the marine environment around the UK within the projections.
This course can be taken as a stand alone option or following the Introductory or Intermediate courses.
UK Climate Projections – User Interface Advanced Level including the Weather Generator
In this course we will explore the use of the more advanced functions of the User Interface, with most time devoted to the use of the Weather Generator.
The Weather Generator allows for the creation of a statistically valid representation of future climate at a daily or hourly level, which can be useful for many types of impacts analysis – particularly flooding and temperature.
This course requires a high degree of computer literacy and confidence in using large data sets (approx. 70-120 mb). If you are unsure whether your have appropriate skills for this course, please contact us, prior to booking.
