Why adapt?

No one can know exactly what will happen in the future, but we must plan ahead and be ready to deal with the effects that our changing climate will bring.

Identifying and managing the possible risks and opportunities posed by climate change is becoming of increasing interest to both the public and private sectors, and is a key feature of the  Climate Change Act.

Having access to good information and appropriate tools increases your ability to:

  • assess the risks faced by your business or organisation
  • consider the options available to you
  • and make sensible and robust decisions.

UKCIP offer a range of options that can help provide your business or organisation with the knowledge, skills and tools that it will need to not only survive, but also thrive in the face of our changing climate.

Who are UKCIP?

UKCIP were set up in 1997 and are based at Oxford University.  Our role is to help businesses and organisations adapt to our changing climate.

UKCIP is the only organisation in the UK to focus exclusively on adapting to climate change.

What is adaptation?

Adaptation, along with mitigation, is an essential part of addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with climate change. Mitigation refers to our efforts to limit the man-made causes of climate change. Adaptation addresses the risks, impacts and opportunities resulting from a changing climate.

Go to the Adaptation pages to find out more.

The diagram below show the stages involved in the Adaptation Wizard, the UKCIP tool designed to help you adapt to climate change.

How do I adapt?

The first stage on the adaptation pathway is to identify the current sensitivities and vulnerabilities of your business or organisation to potential climate change.

Next you need to look at how the climate may change in the future and whether those vulnerabilities or thresholds are likely to be exceeded.

And finally, based on what you have found, you need to decide if any actions are necessary and if so, the timescales involved.

UKCIP provides a suite of tools that enable you to look at every aspect of this process – and training to help you use them.
