Transport is vital for both urban and rural communities in the UK and is vulnerable to disruption from different forms of extreme weather events: from snow and flooding causing road closures, to heat buckling rails, to strong winds or fog causing delays at the airport.
Under scenarios of future climate change we can expect some of these disruptions to occur more frequently; current efforts to respond to or prepare for extreme weather events will need to be re-visited, re-orientated and possibly expanded just to maintain current levels of efficiency. Projections also suggest that some forms of disruption may become less of a problem for the transport infrastructure such as cold weather events.
Given the importance of the transport infrastructure both socially and economically, it is important that the transport system adapts to the projected changes in climate.
On December 7 2007, a workshop took place in London with the title Developing a Transport Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation. The aim of the workshop was to help the department for transport and the department for the environment, food and rural affairs to better understand how the UK's transport system could adapt to climate change. This report summarises the main discussion points (pdf, 250 KB).
