  Sector Definition
  Agriculture and horticulture
Agriculture and horticulture relating to commercial food production and distribution, the management of agricultural and horticultural land and potential diversification of land use. Horticulture related to plants grown for commercial purposes. This category also includes gardens.
  Biodiversity and nature conservation Marine and terrestrial biodiversity and nature conservation including the protection of natural, self-regulating marine and terrestrial ecosystems and the conservation of environments. Protection, management and conservation, including habitats, landscapes, trees and non-commercial forests. 
  Buildings
The design, construction, maintenance and retrofit of all building types.  The management and protection of existing buildings and the development of the domestic environment such as the location, design and construction of new buildings. This category includes residential, commercial, industrial and public buildings. 
  Defence and security
Activities associated with defending the UK and strengthening peace and stability. Capability to acquire and operate complex defence systems within demanding time, cost and performance targets.
  Emergency planning and services
Those services provided in connection with an emergency. Services that deal with emergencies and other aspects of public safety e.g. police, fire and ambulance services, coast guard and mountain rescue.
An emergency is defined as an actual or imminent event that creates a substantial risk of loss, damage, interruption of services, or threat to the public health or safety that requires immediate response.
  Energy
The provision and maintenance of energy supplies including considerations of supply and demand (electricity, coal, oil, gas).  Includes renewable energy development and provision.
  Financial services/insurers and investors
Commercial activities operating within the financial services sector, including investment, banking, building societies and insurance providers
  Fisheries
Commercial fisheries and related activities. Activities and adaptations related to recreational fishing should be listed under Leisure, tourism and lifestyle.
  Flood management and coastal issues
Coastal processes refer to activities occurring within 1 km of the land/sea interface and include erosion, sediment movement, wave action and coastal defence.

Flood management includes physical flood impacts on water courses in different scales of catchments and physiographic settings. Flood types include fluvial, pluvial and groundwater. 
  Forestry Commercial forestry and associated activities including trees grown for commercial purposes. Activities and adaptations related to non-commercial forests should be listed under Biodiversity and nature conservation.
  Health and healthcare Issues of health and well being. Including disease, pests, vulnerable groups and positive opportunities. Also includes provision of health care services, accessibility/access and future health care design and development. This sector includes environmental health. Infrastructure issues are included under buildings.
  Heritage This category includes natural and built heritage.
  Leisure, Tourism and Lifestyle
The provision of tourism accommodation, attractions, activities, food and drink retail outlets (including urban, rural and coastal) and recreational, leisure and sports facilities.
  Manufacturing and Industry
Including chemicals, paper, metals, manufacturing, food and drink, retail.
  Multi-sector
Examples which cover more than 5 sectors.
  Non-sector specific
Examples which are not specific to any particular sector.
  Planning incl. spatial and sustainable development
Planning which is largely achieved through the statutory framework at regional and local scales which delivers the development and associated infrastructure that is sustainable and which creates better places in which people can live and work. Includes maintenance of green spaces.
  Retail
Establishments engaged in retailing merchandise, generally without transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise. Includes all types of retail outlets and deals with changes in demand, the supply chain, storage and distribution.
  Services
Technical, artistic and other (non-retail) professional services of use of space or equipment considering issues of both supply and demand.
  Telecommunications
All activities associated with the provision of telecommunications services including operations and infrastructure.
  Transport
Includes transportation operations as well as infrastructure.
  Waste management
All activities associated with the collection and disposal of waste.
  Water resources
Primary effects on water quantity in water courses including low flows, surface drainage and urban drainage. This category also includes treatment of waste water as well as water supply and demand, water quality and use of water to maintain aquatic environments.
