IPCC
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was set up jointly by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme to provide an authoritative international statement of scientific understanding of climate change. Its role is to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of risk of human-induced climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. The IPCC does not carry out research nor does it monitor climate related data or other relevant parameters. It bases its assessments mainly on peer reviewed and published scientific/technical literature. These assessments are the most comprehensive and up-to-date reports available on the subject, and form the standard reference for all concerned with climate change in academia, government and industry worldwide.
Fourth Assessment Report (AR4)
IPCC
is currently finalizing its Fourth Assessment Report "Climate Change
2007", also referred to as AR4. Reports by three Working Groups provide
a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the current state of
knowledge on climate change; each report has a Summary for
Policy-makers. A Synthesis Report integrates the information around six
topic areas.
