How will the expected changes in climate affect the operations of your business? What shifts will there be in the pattern of demand for your products? Are your raw materials going to be as abundant? Will climatic changes affect the comfort of your employees and customers? Or will more frequent extreme weather events lead to loss of business continuity?
The trend for warmer, drier summers; milder, wetter winters; and more extreme weather events will affect almost every aspect of business and will result in unexpected costs as well as changes to the operating environment. Customer preferences will change so that some markets will shrink while others grow and there will be new emerging opportunities.
Forward planning can minimise the threats and maximise the opportunities created by a changing climate.
Some impacts will be felt across all business sectors, such as the potential for disruption to distribution networks. However, the consequence of all impacts on individual businesses will depend on where they are, what they are doing and what their business priorities are. The likely level of risk and most effective response at the level of an individual business is therefore generally poorly understood.
UKCIP's work with business aims to help organisations assess their vulnerability and understand the latest scientific information in order to and manage these risks successfully. We work through intermediary organisations that support and represent business as well as directly with companies. We are also involved in steering research in business and climate change impacts and adaptation, such as through the Adapting and Resilience to a Changing Climate (ARCC) research programme.
