Though UKCIP has a remit only in the UK, we also work with other national and international efforts because we want to learn from impacts and adaptation work elsewhere, and to contribute to adaptation globally.

National adaptation programmes with close links to UKCIP include those in Canada, China, Finland, France, and Sweden. A useful reference for many countries is the National Communication on Climate Change, required under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which always has a chapter on vulnerability, impacts, and adaptation.

At a European level, we have been involved in the ESPACE  project on planning and adaptation in Regions around the North Sea, and the second European Climate Change Programme, which now has an adaptation component. UKCIP has contributed to the debate around the European Commission’s green paper on adaptation

Internationally, we have been involved with some aspects of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, though not with the Kyoto Protocol, which deals only with mitigation. Our work has become focussed around the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change.
