The effect of past global greenhouse gas emissions means that the world is already committed to some level of future climate change which cannot now be avoided, thus there is a strong incentive to adapt to minimise the consequences of climate change, and, where possible, to maximise the opportunities.
We all will need the best possible information on how the climate may change, so that we can plan accordingly. The UK Climate Projections (UKCP09) have been created to provide this information.
People often have to make decisions based on uncertain information, such as population changes, economic growth and customer behaviour, as well as climate change.
The UK is already taking steps to adapt to unavoidable climate change. UKCP09 will help to make many adaptation measures more effective and appropriate. For example, adapting to more extreme changes can be expensive – so trying to gauge how much the climate may change is important in order to protect ourselves, whilst at the same time avoiding unnecessary expenditure.
There will also be opportunities from a changing climate, and UKCP09 will have a role in helping to identify these, so that organisations and business can take advantage of them.
UKCP09 aims to make the uncertainties around future climate change information clearer, by providing a range of potential outcomes.
If you think that you might be someone who would benefit from using UKCP09, have a look at our checklist to help you decide.
