If the UKCIP02 scenarios are to be used for impacts assessment, it is important to have an understanding of the methods and principles involved in creating the scenarios. It is also recommended that all users are familiar with the accompanying UKCIP02 Scientific Report before proceeding with data analysis.

The obtaining the scenarios page outlines how the UKCIP02 scenarios can be obtained from the Scenarios Gateway. It also describes what UKCIP02 climate change scenario information is available. The documentation has been revised since publication of the original UKCIP02 Scientific Report and these pages should be considered the most up-to-date source of background information for the UKCIP02 scenarios.

The displaying the scenarios page explains the data formats that have been used to distribute the UKCIP02 climate change scenarios, and explains the best way to go about viewing and using the information.

Some of the results from the UKCIP02 scenarios have more certainty than others. The handling uncertainty page provides guidance on this from a UKCIP02-user perspective. Qualitative relative confidence levels have been defined based upon expert opinion, and quantitative uncertainty margins have been developed for some climatic variables. Examples of good practice are highlighted by the case studies page, which demonstrates the variety of ways in which the UKCIP02 climate change scenarios can be used.

General guidance about the use of climate change scenarios for impacts assessment (not specific to the UKCIP02 scenarios) is also available, including frequently asked questions and a glossary.
