Northern Ireland partnership
Northern Ireland is a Devolved Administration within the United Kingdom.
Climate Change, both mitigation and adaptation, is the responsibility of the Devolved Administration. The policy context is provided by the Sustainability Strategy for N Ireland.
Within this responsibility the Department of the Environment of the Northern Ireland Government commissioned a research project entitled Preparing for a Changing Climate in Northern Ireland, SNIFFER 2007. This study built upon a previous study Implications of Climate Change for Northern Ireland: informing Strategy Development, SNIFFER 2002.
Published on behalf of DOE and EHS, this more recent report examines the potential impacts of climate change in Northern Ireland across a broad range of sectors. It looks at measures already being undertaken in Northern Ireland and considers what else may be required to adapt to these impacts. Success in meeting this challenge depends on the development of actions taken in partnership across the region.
Therefore, the Northern Ireland Climate Change Impacts Partnership has been set up following recommendations for such an arrangement in the report. Its purpose is to bring together key stakeholders in Northern Ireland to secure a shared goal of building resilience and readiness to meet the threats and opportunities presented by a changing climate.
The partnership has begun to develop a programme of activity on four separate but related themes:
- Communication
- Climate Change Tools
- Declarations
- Projects
The communications group has undertaken a baseline survey to understand current levels of activity amongst different stakeholders. The tools group has run a workshop on the portfolio of UKCIP tools and their application to adaptation decision making. A UKCP09 Pre-launch Workshop is scheduled for March 2008.
UKCIP has maintained contact with colleagues in the DoE in Northern Ireland various stages of development over the past 3 or 4 years and over this has orchestrated various events, and publications. It welcomes the creation of the partnership and looks forward to assisting further with its developing programme.
The present contact for the Northern Ireland partnership is Michael McCallion.
