Climate change impacts in the North West
The North West was the first region of the UK to complete at scoping study into the impacts of climate change. Everybody has an impact – climate change impacts in the North West of England showed that there would be effects in a number of areas.
- Flooding
- Water supply
- Agriculture
- Biodiversity
- Tourism and leisure
- Manufacturing
For example:
-
The 430 km coastline of North West England is generally low-lying, and much of its southern length is urbanised, with around 95,000 people located in the coastal floodplain, along with major sites of manufacturing (25% of the UK's chemical industry), and primary tourist destinations. The threat of sea level rise, and coastal inundation, is therefore considered to be an important threat
-
The rural uplands of the North West (ranging from the Cumbrian mountains to the Forest of Bowland, the Western and Southern Pennines, and the Peak District fringes) comprises species which are highly specialised to suit a cold, maritime climate. Such species could be under threat from changes in climatic conditions, although there is potential for northward migration
-
For manufacturing, warmer weather will mean lower energy bills in winter, but higher bills for cooling in summer. Summer working conditions will deteriorate
