Climate change impacts in the West Midlands
The report The potential impacts of climate change in the West Midlands focussed on five issues identified as the most likely to affect the region. These were:
- water management
- agriculture
- energy
- land use and the built environment
- transport
For example:
-
Increased demand for irrigation because of drier soils - possibly up by 23% by the 2020s
-
Higher winter temperatures ease cold-weather problems for livestock
-
Power cables may suffer increased sagging because of hot summer weather
-
Some land could become unusable because of flooding as rainfall patterns change
-
Warmer, drier summers could encourage more walking and cycling, for both leisure and work travel
