What can I do?

Much of adaptation to climate change will be led by organisations such as local councils, central government and utility companies, but individuals can take action too.

This section gives you a few suggestions and useful links, but it is not intended to be comprehensive.

Extreme weather

The Met Office forecasts are available from its website. Forecasts are for anything from the next few hours to the coming month. Local radio and TV are good sources of information about current or expected extreme weather, and what is being done to prepare for any local impacts.

Flooding

Flood warnings for the UK are handled by three regional agencies, and involve the emergency services as well as local authorities. All have 24 hour helplines, online warnings and close links with local media. There are also flood risk maps where homeowners & businesses see the likelihood of their property being flooded.

Heatwaves

The Met Office operate an online Heat-Health Watch warning system for England and Wales, in association with the Department of Health and Welsh Assembly Government.

More details on how to look after yourself and others during flooding or heatwaves is available on this site, with links to the respective agencies under Related links.
