Costings
As the potential importance of climate change on private and public sector bodies is recognised, so the need to get a better idea of the magnitude of the impacts of climate change in economic terms increases. Costing the impacts of climate change is a methodology for calculating the costs of climate impacts and describes how to compare these to the costs of adaptation measures.
The guidance is aimed at decision-makers and should be used in conjunction with a decision-making framework to take account of climate risks and uncertainties.
The methodology can be applied across a wide range of sectors and geographical scales – the Implementation guidelines include a case study on agriculture and irrigation. A further group of case studies are available in pdf format.
A simplified spreadsheet version of the costing methodology is available to download that allows users to explore the costs of climate impacts for agricultural crops, road maintenance, dwellings and health associated with overheating and flooding. Guidance on relating the costs to those associated with adaptation measures is also included.
