UKCIP staff
Staff work closely with stakeholders to provide information and support, and to co-ordinate regional and national work into the impacts of climate change. The team’s role is to:
- identify common research priorities;
- facilitate interaction within and between studies;
- offer expertise on impacts assessment and independent advice on the most appropriate methodologies and research approaches; and
- communicate results from the assessments to a wide audience to inform decision-making.

Chris West, Director
Chris joined UKCIP in 2002, having previously undertaken zoological research and research administration. He is responsible to funders for the delivery of the programme, and to the University for its management. He tries to keep up with all areas of UKCIP activity, promotes adaptation in stakeholders, and maintains relationships with partner organisations.
Diana Calvert, Office Administrator
Diana joined UKCIP in 2006, having spent the majority of her working life in scientific publishing. She is responsible for all administrative tasks required by the team – this includes financial matters, travel/hotel bookings both domestic and international, event planning, despatch of publications, Minute taking, general telephone enquiries etc.
Stephanie Ferguson, Communications Officer
The UKCIP, UKCP09, ARCC and ITRC websites are a major part of Stephanie’s role at UKCIP, from design and overall structure to editing text. She is also responsible for the design of publications and any visual aspects of the UKCIP tools, as well as managing the enews mailing list and enquiries email account. She joined UKCIP in 2002.
Megan Gawith, Scientific Officer
With over 15 years experience in the field of climate change impacts and adaptation, Megan has worked on numerous projects, tools and outputs at UKCIP. She is currently responsible for maintaining and developing the UKCIP Adaptation Wizard and supporting the development of UKCIP’s other tools and resources. She also leads on the publication of UKCIP’s work in the literature and coordinates production of the Climate Digest.
Vicky Hayman, Science Officer, ACN
Vicky joined UKCIP in 2009 and is involved in the management of the Adaptation and Resilience to a Changing Climate (ARCC) Coordination Network which focuses on sector-specific adaptation options in the built environment and its infrastructure.
Kay Jenkinson, Communications Manager
Kay joined UKCIP in 2003, where she focuses on ensuring effective communication with stakeholders to promote their engagement in adaptation processes. She has academic qualifications in politics and in publishing. Before joining UKCIP, Kay worked in a variety of information and communication roles in the public and charitable sectors.
Kay Johnstone, Project Officer
Kay joined UKCIP in 2006 and is responsible for delivering the programme of work with UK businesses. She has 8 years experience in the environmental sector with involvement in both practical environmental management projects and research activities.
Richard Lamb, Training Manager
Richard joined UKCIP in 2006 and has over 10 years experience delivering training to both the public and private sectors. Richard also has extensive project management skills, having delivered both large scale and national training programmes.
Kate Lonsdale, Adaptation Officer
Since joining UKCIP in November 2008, Kate’s work has focused on learning from existing adaptation practice with a particular interest in the social implications of climate change. Previous work includes stakeholder engagement in adapting to climate change and enhancing livelihood security, understanding how organisations access information about climate change and how awareness of climate change is translated into adaptation on the ground. Kate is also UKCIP’s representative on the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP).
Sophie Millin, Science Officer
Sophie joined UKCIP in 2010 following 3 and a half years in the public sector. She recently completed a postgraduate qualification in sustainable environmental management and joined UKCIP to support its work with the uptake of UKCP09. Sophie is currently responsible for developing UKCP09 case studies, reviewing new guidance and working with user communities to support UKCP09.
Anastasia Mylona, Technical Advisor, ACN
Anastasia has been working with UKCIP and the Chartered Institution of Buildig Services Engineers (CIBSE) for more than four years to produce design guidance and tools on adaptation to be used by building professionals. She is currently involved in the management of the Adaptation and Resilience to a Changing Climate Coordination Nework (ACN) offering subject matter expertise.
Laurie Newton, Project Officer
Laurie joined UKCIP in 2005 having been working as a freelance sustainability consultant for a number of years. He focuses on work with local government and has been heavily involved in the support programme for performance indicator NI188: Planning to adapt to climate change. He also works closely with the Nottingham Declaration on climate change and is responsible for the adaptation component of their website.
Patrick Pringle, Climate Adaptation Officer
Patrick joined UKCIP in 2010, prior to which he spent ten years working on a wide range of social and economic development projects for international institutions, governments, local authorities and civil society organisations, both in the UK and overseas. Patrick’s work focuses on providing advice and support on adaptation to a range of organisations, including through the development of guidance and tools, and supporting the work of the RCCPs.
Maria Shamash, Knowledge Transfer Partnership Research Associate
Maria is working with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) looking into adaptation of non-domestic buildings to climate change, assessing impacts, ways of using climate projections and refurbishment solutions that make buildings more resilient.
Roger Street, Technical Director
Roger joined UKCIP in 2006 after working over for 30 years for the Canadian federal government, much of which focused on climate, and impacts and adaptation. He leads the Programme’s technical and scientific, providing guidance to support impacts, vulnerability, risk and adaptation assessments, at developing and delivering new supportive resources and tools. Roger also has experience delivering national assessments having lead Canada’s first national assessment on climate change impacts, been involved in an advisory role within the first US national assessment and is currently involved in the UK’s first Climate Change Risk Assessment.
